Tsunami...

My time is precious lately, so I was a bit irritated with myself after being sucked into watching exciting footage of Hawaiian beaches for about 15 minutes yesterday.

I did have to chuckle at the very public failure of the predictive power of "science" though. You could almost feel the "experts" responsible for scaring the crap out of Hawaii squirming while the world closely examined every breaking wave in hopes of seeing a deadly tsunami.

It ended up being a Y2K flashback.

Honestly, I am surprised.

Maybe Japan might get something where there are gently sloping shores,
but on an atoll, nope not a chance. Beach drops off too quick me thinks.
Maybe my "thinking" was wrong, but that was what occurred to me as soon as they said tsunami alert,
"maybe elsewhere, but the atolls should miss it".
I was hoping some of the Antarctic scientists might get it though...
They'd probably be OK though, blowing up all them spare condoms they have there.
A pun on an old (and reputedly) Shetland saying springs to mind...

Where scientists are scientists,

Scientists defend warning after tsunami non-event

Scientists acknowledged they overstated the threat but defended their actions, saying they took the proper steps and learned the lessons of the 2004 Indonesian tsunami that killed thousands of people who didn't get enough warning.

So apparently it is in the genes of scientists to exaggerate threats.

Did you guys know that Hilo Hawaii had 34 foot waves following the 1960 Chilean massive 9.5 scale earthquake?
